Fort Jesup celebrated its 200th birthday on May 13-14. Future President, Zachary Taylor Garrison Commander, officially recognized the completion of the Fort on May 13, 1822. Fort Jesup was established to bring law and order to No Man’s Land—that strip of land between Louisiana and Texas where the boundary had not been officially designated when the Louisiana Purchase took place.

The “party” began on Friday evening with educational talks by Ricky Robertson on the Louisiana Maneuvers of 1941 and other military “happenings” in the Fort Jesup area. Carrie McCormic, Park Manager, discussed women involved in the Fort Activities. On Saturday morning, Scott Debose, President of the Friends of Fort Jesup and author of the History of Fort Jesup, talked about the history of the area and the Fort.

Extra patrols will be on duty to ensure that our Town’s citizens are safe as they travel on city streets and roads throughout town. “This campaign is to raise awareness that wearing a seat belt is one of the safest habits to learn, from the time your children are passengers in a vehicle,” said Many Police Chief Cheryl Wooley. “One of the safest choices you can make is to buckle up EVERY TIME you get into a vehicle, especially for children,” Wooley added.

Seven Pleasant Hill High School seniors receive associate degrees through dual enrollment program

Seven Pleasant Hill High School

Numerous Pleasant Hill High School graduating seniors received more than just a diploma. Through dual enrollment, they were also awarded associate degrees from Northwestern State University. Pictured from left are Melanie McBride of NSU Dual Enrollment, Trenton Scott, Ty Russell, Landri Leach, McKenzie Crowley, Kylee Crowley, Alex Calhoun, and Micah Armstrong.

On May 7, Pleasant Hill High School graduated 22 outstanding students. Seven of these seniors have been in Pleasant Hill High School’s Dual Enrollment Program throughout their high school years. The dual enrollment courses are rigorous as the courses are taught online by the professors at Northwestern State University. Each student had a goal to obtain their Associates Degree in General Studies through NSU. In addition to their NSU classes, these students were also taking courses at Pleasant Hill High School. There have been lots of tears, late night study sessions, lots of tutoring sessions, meetings with the administrative team to check on each student’s progress, and tons of snacks… but each one accomplished their goal. The faculty, staff, and administration are proud of them for reaching this milestone in their life. Each of these students will enter college as junior.
