Iberia Clinic issued zoning variance

The Iberia Health Clinic applied for and was issued a zoning variance at 1050 North Robinson in Many at the most recent meeting of the town council. By a vote of 4-1, the special exception zoning variance passed. According to the special 
exception use clause, within an R-1 residential district, a zoning variance may grant an exception to allow for the construction of a hospital or medical facility.

Sabine deputies raid organized dogfighting event

On Saturday, March 22, Sabine Parish Sheriff’s Office deputies, along with deputies from the DeSoto Parish Sheriff’s Office, made several arrests in Sabine Parish after raiding an organized dogfighting event near Hicks Lane off of La. 175.

Small named Sabine Hall of Fame Accomplishment Award recipient

Derrick Ryan Small, 18, has been chosen as the recipient for the Sabine Hall of Fame’s Accomplishment Award, according to Pete Abington, chairman. Small, a senior at Many High, will be honored at the annual banquet on Tuesday, April 1 at the VFW Hall in Many. Door will open at 6 p.m. Tickets, which may be purchased at Pete Abington’s Office and MidSouth Bank in Many, are $35 each. Derrick is the son of Marty and Jana Carver and Casey Small, all of Many.

ACLU dismisses lawsuit against SPSB

The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) and the Sabine Parish School Board reached an agreement last week. Last Friday, a federal district court approved a consent decree, which required the Sabine Parish School board to stop a variety of practices which impose religion on students in Sabine Parish schools.

Beloved former MHS teacher claimed by death

The community of Many and the students she instructed in English, Fine Arts and Speech from grades 9-12 at Many High from 1990-2006 lost a beloved educator Saturday night, March 15. Melanie LaFleur Schweiger died at her home with family and close friends surrounding her after a lengthy battle with ovarian cancer and other complications. She was 57.

Town to conduct smoke test

The Town of Many will be conducting leak test in the sanitary sewer systems by blowing smoke into these pipes during the 
coming week, Monday, March 17, through Tuesday, March 18. This smoke test will reveal sources of sewer odors in neighborhoods, as well as places where some and other surface waters are entering the sanitary system
